A bar chart displays a number of variables together, similar to a column chart. Bars charts are good for simple comparisons, e.g., to display the top 10 product sales, or monthly output.

Once you select a dimension, you will see a bar for each focused item in the dimension. In summary view there will be a bar each for current and previous period or stream.

Working example

In this example, we want to create a bar chart to compare office expenses for the current financial YTD vs. the previous year.

Step 1: In this example, we'll use our 'Finance' database, and prepare our grid as shown below, with these selections: Variance mode, 'sub account' dimension, financial YTD, and three items selected: Stationery, office consumables and postage.

  • The x axis displays the total. This always starts at zero.
  • The y axis depends on the mode. In period mode and moving mode, the y axis will display the time units of your current period (e.g. months/days/years). In variance modestream mode and total mode, the y axis will display each focused item in the current dimension

The office expenses this YTD are shown in blue vs. last YTD in red. The chart can now be saved as a favorite or added to a dashboard.

    Info

    Availability:

    • Summary view-All modes except for Transaction mode.

    • Focused view (when you select and focus on items in a dimension) - All modes except for Search, Transaction and Market.

A Bar chart displays several variables together, in horizontal bars. Bar charts are good for displaying simple comparisons, for example, the top 10 product sales or monthly output. You can hover over data points to display the underlying values.

    Tip

If you prefer to view vertical bars (columns), use a Column chart.

The following table describes what the Bar chart looks like in each view.

The X-axis displays the total, which starts at zero.

    Y-axis

The Y-axis displays the time units of your current period.

The contents of the Y-axis depends on the mode. In Period and Moving mode, it displays the time units of your current period. Whereas, in Variance, Stream and Total mode, it displays each focused item.

Example - Compare the performance of Sales Reps

In the Sales database, create a Bar chart to compare the performance of the top five Sales Reps for the current financial year to date (YTD) with the previous year.

    1. Prepare the data in the grid:

      1. Select the Sales Rep dimension, then select and focus on the top five Sales Reps.

      2. Select Mode > Variance.

      3. Select Period > Financial YTD.

    2. Click the Chart button in the top right toolbar above the grid. The Bar chart type displays by default. You can now compare the sales for each of the five Sales Reps this year to date (blue bars) with that of last year (red bars).
