Period stream mode allows you to compare two streams of data side by side, e.g., sales vs. budget, for selected date ranges (working a bit like a combination of Period mode and Stream mode). It displays selected current and 'previous; results, along with Variance and percentage variance columns.

Period stream mode is not always enabled, but if it has been enabled for your site you'll see it in the modes menu once you select a dimension.

Example of period stream mode

In this example we want to compare sales with orders for the last 3 months for a selection of customers.

  • From the 'Sales' database select 'Ship to' dimension and select customers.
  • Select Period > Last 3 months
  • Select Mode > Period stream, as shown below. An additional button will now appear to the right of the standard 'sales' stream button. In this example the additional stream 'orders' has been selected.

As shown below, the grid will display results for sales and orders, both as total and for each month. Variance is also displayed, as an amount and as a percentage.

Note about custom mode columns in period stream mode

When you are in period stream mode the column headings in the custom mode window show the 'grouping' title first, followed by the individual column title, separate by a 'pipe' character (in the screenshot below, an example is 'Total|Sales' in the first row in the window). Note that if you are changing the title for the 'grouping' you need to change it for all the columns that are in that group.

How these columns appear in the grid:

Learn about how the variance is calculated

  • The values in the Variance column = (Current - Previous)

  • The values in the % Variance column = ((Current - Previous) / Previous) *100

  • The totals at the top of the Current, Previous and Variance columns are the sum of all the cells in their respective columns

  • The total at the top of the % Variance column = ((Total Current - Total Previous) / Total Previous) *100
